Our history

While our mission hasn't wavered, Healthy Male has evolved significantly over the past two decades to meet the needs of Australian men and boys. Learn a little more about our history including the huge achievements, the galvanising challenges and the pivotal decisions that shaped us.

Our brief history


Healthy Male is founded

Healthy Male was founded in 2000 by Prof David de Kretser.


Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health Reference Group formed

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health Reference Group is our longest-running working group.


First Men’s Health Week campaign

An annual campaign to encourage conversation about men’s wellbeing.


Founder and Director, David de Kretser, becomes Governor of Victoria

For his lasting and invaluable contribution to public health


Launch of the National Male Health Policy

Healthy Male was strongly involved in developing the National Male Health Policy in collaboration with the Australian Government.


The Men in Australia Telephone Survey (MATeS)

Healthy Male has both led and collaborated on a range of significant research projects over its history.


Funding for Andrology Australia ceased

The Australian Government Department of Health ceased funding Healthy Male in May 2016, leaving the organisation with an uncertain future.


Launch of the National Men’s Health Strategy 2020-2030

Launched by the Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt.


Rebrand from Andrology Australia to Healthy Male

In 2019 we rebranded from ‘Andrology Australia’ to ‘Healthy Male’.

A Focus on Fathers’ Case for Change.


‘What’s in the way?’ survey

We asked over 1200 Australian men about the things that prevent them from seeing a health professional when they need to.


Expanded the reach of our health practitioner resources

We moved to the Medcast platform.
