TB-500 is marketed online as a peptide for faster recovery and tissue repair. Here’s what the evidence shows, what the risks are and whether TB-500 is legal in Australia.
Firstly, what are peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, found in every cell and involved in many essential body processes. Some peptides act as hormones that regulate immunity, growth and repair, and how we use and store energy. Some medicines are synthetic (lab‑made) peptides that copy the actions of natural hormones, for example, insulin for diabetes and semaglutide for diabetes and obesity. There are other synthetic peptides that have not been well tested, often because early studies found they were not effective or are potentially toxic.
What’s TB-500?
TB-500 is a seven‑amino‑acid fragment of a naturally occurring peptide called thymosin beta-4, which is involved in tissue repair. TB-500 is believed to play a role in the repair and regeneration of damaged cells and tissue. Thymosin beta-4 has been studied in animal and cell experiments for roles in cell migration, blood vessel formation and soft‑tissue repair. There is limited human evidence for muscle, bone, tendon and ligament healing benefits of thymosin beta-4. Thymosin beta-4 is not used medically.
While it’s assumed TB-500 might behave similarly to full‑length Tβ4, there is no evidence for this.
What are the risks or side effects of TB-500?
We don’t fully know the safety of TB-500 because we don’t have long-term studies in humans. Because thymosin beta-4 promotes cell migration and angiogenesis, there are concerns that it could cause cancer. This risk has not been excluded.
TB-500 is not proven to be safe, it is not proven to work, and it is not approved for use by any regulatory agency.
It might be easy to buy peptides online or from someone at the gym, but that doesn’t make them safe. Doses and ingredients could be different to what’s on the label (if there even is a label), and there’s risk of contamination. We also don’t know how this peptide interacts with existing conditions and medications.
The TGA released a safety alert in April 2026 stating it was concerned about an increase in the importation and supply of unapproved peptides, which were a “safety risk”. “These products have not been evaluated for safety, quality or effectiveness by the TGA,” the alert said.
At best, these drugs could be a waste of money. At worst, using them might cause death. They could be doing damage that we won’t know about for years to come.
Is TB-500 legal in Australia?
TB-500 is not approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
When sold online, TB-500 is often described as ‘experimental’ or ‘for research only’ but the peptide is a Schedule 4 prescription-only medicine in Australia making it illegal to possess without a valid prescription. Labelling as ‘experimental’ or ‘for research only’ does not make it legal to sell, supply, possess or use.
The fact that these substances are banned is certainly not proof that they work.
