Sermorelin is a synthetic (man-made) version of a naturally occurring substance that stimulates release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. It was previously used to treat children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but other drugs have taken its place. What is sermorelin, and how does it work?
Sermorelin is a synthetic (man-made) version of part of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) — the hormone your hypothalamus naturally produces to tell your pituitary gland to release growth hormone (GH). Like GHRH, sermorelin binds to GHRH receptors in the pituitary and stimulates GH release.
Sermorelin doesn’t add external growth hormone to your system — it tells your pituitary to release more of its own. The pituitary’s normal feedback mechanisms remain intact, which is one reason people think it’s a “gentler” approach to increasing GH levels.
What does the evidence show?
Medical use in growth hormone deficiency
Sermorelin had a well-established use in children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Its original clinical approval in the US covered diagnostic testing of pituitary function and treatment of GHD in paediatric patients. There are other tests used now for assessing pituitary dysfunction, and once human growth hormone became available to treat GHD, sermorelin became unnecessary.
Evidence for previous use in children with a documented hormonal deficit or from low-quality studies of older people with age-related GH decline does not support sermorelin’s use by healthy adults.
Anti-ageing and body composition in healthy adults
Sermorelin is promoted as a way to reverse age-related GH decline, reduce body fat, and increase lean muscle mass in healthy middle-aged and older adults. But no peer-reviewed clinical trials have demonstrated that sermorelin improves athletic performance, reduces recovery time, or enhances physical capacity in healthy, non-GH-deficient people. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) doesn’t prohibit sermorelin because of any performance benefit — it’s banned because use demonstrates an intent to obtain an advantage and the monitoring framework for misuse exists.
The gap between pharmacokinetics and outcomes
Sermorelin does what it’s supposed to on a biochemical level — it raises GH and IGF-1 in most people who receive it. But a change in a biomarker doesn’t reliably predict a change in how you feel, perform, or age. Clinical medicine is full of examples where improving a number on a test didn’t produce the expected outcome, and sometimes caused harm.

Is sermorelin legal in Australia?
Sermorelin is treated as a Schedule 4 prescription medicine under Australian law. It is not listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), which means it has not been evaluated for quality, safety, or efficacy by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for general supply in Australia.

What are the risks and side effects of sermorelin
Side effects associated with sermorelin include injection-site reactions (redness, swelling, pain), flushing, headache, dizziness, and nausea.
When it comes to longer-term use, sermorelin acts on the GH axis, and sustained supraphysiological GH or IGF-1 levels carry risks including fluid retention, joint pain, and — with prolonged elevation — potential effects on insulin sensitivity. Elevated IGF-1 has been investigated in relation to cancer risk, though causality in humans remains a subject of ongoing research.
Unregulated supply risks
Products sourced outside the formal prescription pathway may not contain what they claim. Peptide products sold online or through gyms can be mislabelled, contaminated, or ineffective in independent testing.
