Professor Ian Vela is a leading Australian Urologic Oncologist with specialist expertise in bladder and prostate cancer. His clinical interests span the surgical and medical management of urologic cancers from early to advanced stages, as well as general urologic conditions. Professor Vela leads research teams at Queensland University of Technology and is principal investigator on multiple clinical trials in bladder and prostate cancer.
Professor Vela completed his medical training at the University of Queensland and undertook urological training across south-east Queensland, alongside a PhD examining factors involved in metastatic prostate cancer. He was later selected for a competitive Society of Urologic Oncology–accredited fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he gained advanced training in robotic, laparoscopic and open cancer surgery. He is a senior staff surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital and a senior research fellow at Queensland University of Technology, and also consults at Greenslopes Private Hospital.
